Cost Estimation for Claude Code on the Team Plan
When adopting Claude Code for an organization, the Team plan is often more appropriate than the individual Max plan ($100–$200/month). However, the Team plan has seat types and a minimum seat requirement that can make cost estimation tricky depending on team size. Here’s a breakdown of the costs I worked out.
Team Plan Pricing Structure
The Team plan pricing is available on the Claude pricing page. (As of February 2026)
Seat Types
The Team plan offers two types of seats.
| Seat Type | Monthly (Monthly Billing) | Monthly (Annual Billing) | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | $125 | $100 | For Claude Code users. 5x Standard usage |
| Standard | $25 | $20 | For web/API usage. Suitable for admin users |
Members who use Claude Code need a Premium seat ($125/month). Admins or members who only use the web version can be assigned Standard seats ($25/month).
Minimum Seat Requirement
The Team plan is designed for 5–150 users and requires a minimum of 5 seats. Even if fewer than 5 people will use it, you’ll be billed for 5 seats. Organizations with more than 150 users should consider the Enterprise plan.
Monthly Costs by Team Size
The following estimates use monthly billing rates. Annual billing reduces Premium seats to $100/month and Standard seats to $20/month.
1–4 Premium Seats
When you have fewer than 5 seats total, the remaining slots must be filled with Standard seats to meet the minimum.
| Premium Seats | Standard Seats | Total Seats | Monthly Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 | 5 (minimum) | $225 |
| 2 | 3 | 5 (minimum) | $325 |
| 3 | 2 | 5 (minimum) | $425 |
| 4 | 1 | 5 (minimum) | $525 |
For example, if only 1 person needs Claude Code, you still need 5 seats minimum, making the cost Premium 1 + Standard 4 = $225/month.
5+ Premium Seats
With 5 or more Premium seats, the minimum requirement is already met. The estimates below include 1 Standard seat for an admin user. If you don’t need a Standard seat, subtract $25 from each row (e.g., 5 Premium seats only = $625/month).
| Premium Seats | Standard Seats | Total Seats | Monthly Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 1 | 6 | $650 |
| 6 | 1 | 7 | $775 |
| 7 | 1 | 8 | $900 |
| 8 | 1 | 9 | $1,025 |
| 9 | 1 | 10 | $1,150 |
| 10 | 1 | 11 | $1,275 |
Each additional Premium seat adds +$125/month.
Comparison with Individual Plans (Max)
For individual use, the Max plan ($100–$200/month) is an option.
| Plan | Monthly Cost | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Max (5x) | $100 | 5x Standard usage |
| Max (20x) | $200 | 20x Standard usage |
| Team Premium | $125 | 5x Standard usage + team management features |
In terms of usage alone, Max (5x) at $100/month and Team Premium at $125/month offer the same usage quota. The Team plan costs $25/month more due to SSO and team management features. Combined with the 5-seat minimum, it can be relatively expensive for small teams.
Tips for Adoption
Set a Billing Limit
The Team plan allows you to set an organization-wide billing limit. Setting an upper bound when you start helps prevent budget overruns.
Consider Annual Billing
Annual billing brings Premium seats down to $100/month (20% off the monthly rate). If you plan to use it long-term, annual billing can significantly reduce costs.
Use Standard Seats Where Possible
Assign Standard seats ($25/month) to members who don’t need Claude Code. Admins, reviewers, or anyone who only needs the web version of Claude can use Standard seats to keep costs down.
Summary
This post covered the cost structure for using Claude Code on the Team plan. The key takeaway is that the 5-seat minimum means even small teams start at $225/month. For teams of 5 or more, the math is straightforward: each additional Claude Code user adds $125/month.
